Frances Perkins: Breaking a Barrier In-Person
Frances Perkins was inspired to become an activist after witnessing the Triangle Factory Fire tragedy in 1911. She worked at the Jane Addams Hull Settlement House and for New York State under Governors Al Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt. When Roosevelt became President in 1933, he nominated Perkins for the position of Secretary of Labor. She was the first woman to serve in a President's Cabinet and was the longest-serving Labor Secretary in the nation's history. During her term there she helped to create the Social Security Act, plus other government efforts of the New Deal.
